Musical Journey

Anirban Bhattacharyya is an Outstanding Hindustani Classical Vocalist of the Patiala Gharana and a Social Anthropologist from Kolkata. A senior disciple of Padmashree Ajoy Chakraborty, Anirban aims to break the boundaries between genres and has curved a unique space for him. Apart from Khyal - his forte, Anirban specializes in all the prominent styles of Thumri singing current in India. Anirban is a President of India Gold and Silver Medal Winner from All India Radio in both Khyal and Thumri, A Champion from Doverlane Music Conference and West Bengal State Music Academy Competitions. Anirban has been awarded National Scholarship in Rabindra Sangeet and currently a pursuing Junior Research Fellowship on Bandish Thumri from Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Anirban has had the privilege of sharing stage with stalwarts of the likes of Kathak maestro Padma Vibhushan Birju Maharaj, Tabla Wizard Ustad Zakir Hussain and Bollywood Superstar Shankar Mahadevan.

Bio Data

Ethnomusicology is defined as the study of social and cultural aspects of music and dance in local and global contexts. As a student of Ethnomusicology from SOAS, London, Anirban began working as an Archivist in Archives and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology, Gurgaon. Anirban has worked as a Research Consultant for Indian Music Experience (IME, Bangalore), Virtual Museum AIIS, and Sustainable Futures (Griffith University, Australia) with Dr. Shubha Chaudhuri which involved original ethnographic research on the subject.

Anirban’s current research focuses on the life and works of Raja Sir Sourindro Mohun Tagore (1840 - 1914). SAHAPEDIA showcases this work on their website in the form of a peer-reviewed article on his life and works, visuals of his collected instruments, ragamala paintings, interviews of experts on his contribution, digital copies of his published books, a reconstructed family tree of Tagore’s lineage – all in one module.

Anirban has been teaching Hindustani Classical Vocal music since 2005. Beginning his career as a Junior Teacher in Shrutinandan for First 5 years, Anirban has been teaching students from all around the globe since last 8 years and made his knowledge available to the students through online video platforms like SKYPE and WhatsApp. This has made classical music much more accessible to the interested music learners and that too one-to-one and according to individual convenience.
